Overview: works in a joint capacity with the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) and the Bureau of Natural Resources, Rhode Island Department of Environmental (RIDEM) to provide Hatchery Technician services to RIDEM- Fish & Wildlife. The incumbent will work out of the RIDEM- Fish & Wildlife Division, Lafayette Trout Hatchery, North Kingstown, RI. The work area will be at 4 state hatcheries as needed and also statewide. This position will be classified as a limited term employee of the WMI. Direct supervision of day-to-day activities will be provided by RIDEM.
Limited-term employees are defined as employees of WMI retained to provide a specific scope of services as defined within one or more grants or contracts awarded to WMI. WMI bases your employment upon your skills and knowledge and ability to achieve desired outcomes defined by RIDEM.
As a limited term employee:
- you will be expected to work no more than an average of 40 hours per week in any 12-month period.
- weekend duties will be required.
- you will not be eligible for vacation pay, sick leave, health or disability benefits, or other employee benefits of any kind.
- you will be eligible for WMI 401(k) retirement benefits and WMI will provide workers’ compensation, general liability protection, professional liability protection and unemployment insurance benefits. WMI will withhold taxes including social security.
- the total annual compensation will reflect your base salary plus the amount contributed to your 401(k) by WMI. Your base salary will be $38,000 and your total compensation will be $50,000. In addition to salary but contingent upon the funding available within the contract or grant that defines your scope of services, WMI will reimburse you for any travel expenses that are necessary and reasonable to perform the duties assigned to you.
- your employment will be “at-will,” which means that either you or WMI can end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason or no reason, with or without notice.
Duties Required:
- to perform fish hatchery duties consisting of feeding, cleaning of raceways and tanks, grading and moving fish, overseeing egg, fry, fingerling, and adult husbandry operations, implementation of predator control devices, and other operational protocols as required,
- under the direction of supervisors, to oversee the overall health care, disease prevention and implementation of treatments as necessary,
- as needed, to add chemical treatments to source water to manipulate pH and hardness values,
- to transport and distribute fish with a stocking truck to hatcheries and stocking locations to the waterways of Rhode Island,
- to perform office and laboratory work as required, including stock inventory, data recording, water chemistry recording,
- to perform simple carpentry repairs, general maintenance, and cleaning of hatchery facilities,
- to perform landscaping duties of mowing, trimming, shrub and small tree removal, transport and placement of stone, gravel, etc.
- to perform simple maintenance on hatchery vehicles and equipment and transport vehicles to vendor repair locations,
- to work weekends and holidays as needed,
- to assist in the preparation of annual reports, technical reports, publications, and other documents,
- to assist in public education programs in hatchery operations, freshwater ecology and recreational fishing programs with the general public and through the Aquatic Resource Education Program.
Qualifications:
- preferred; experience in salmonid fish culture,
- required; the ability to follow directions,
- required; must possess skills in using hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, saws, as well as hand power tools, gas chain saw, gas tree trimmers, gasoline hand mowers, riding mowers, zero-turn mowers.
Conditions for Appointment:
- candidate must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties, as evidenced by a physicians’ certificate.
- Candidate must posses and maintain a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License issued by the State of Rhode Island.
