Introduction
The mission of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is to preserve, protect, and enhance the inland fisheries and wildlife resources of the State and to ensure coordinated planning for the future use, preservation, and effective management of these resources and their critical habitats. The Environmental Review Program works with the regulated community, environmental consultants, other resource and regulatory agencies, and directly applies MDIFW’s species and habitat knowledge, data, and goals to formulate recommendations to avoid, minimize, and mitigate adverse impacts to resources. MDIFW has partnered with the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) to increase the capacity of the Environmental Review Program. This position will be a limited, full-time contracted position through calendar year 2025 with the potential for additional one-year term extensions. The position is based in Augusta, but telework options are available after suitable training, demonstrated proficiency, and an appropriate probationary period.
Job Description
This position works in and assists the Department’s Environmental Review Program, with primary responsibilities to review project applications filed under state, federal, and local regulatory jurisdictions and affecting land and water resources in the State of Maine. The position will work with regional fisheries, wildlife, and research staff, review input received for consistency with Department objectives and legal requirements and provide formal recommendations on behalf of MDIFW under the guidance of the Environmental Review Coordinator and Environmental Program Supervisor. Position duties may also include entering relevant information into the Department’s environmental review database, helping to administer centralized permit application review functions, responding to public information and data requests in a timely manner, and other related tasks as necessary. Work will be conducted primarily in the office, with some related field investigations as needed. Specific job duties may vary depending on the candidate’s experience and skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Knowledge of Maine’s inland fisheries, wildlife, at-risk plant species and critical habitats as well as Maine Biogeography.
- Awareness of and ability to interpret environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to evaluate complex proposals affecting natural resources.
- Experience and ability effectively communicating scientific concepts.
- Analytical and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS as well as proficiency in computer operations (e.g., Excel, Word, Adobe, etc.)
- Ability to work, communicate, and coordinate as part of a professional team.
- Desire to learn and to make a positive difference for Maine’s natural resources.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, this position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife, Fisheries, Natural Resources, Forestry, or a related field.
