Moose Returns!
Extirpated since 2003, Ecology and Management of the North American Moose is alive, better than ever and again available. Originally published in late 1997 and lost only a few years later when the publisher, Smithsonian Institution Press, went under, the book?all 760 pages, more than 1,000 photos, illustrations and tables, and 5 pounds of it?has just been released by the University Press of Colorado (UPC). A host of printing errors in the original release has been corrected in the new edition.
Albert W. Franzmann and Charles C. Schwartz compiled and edited this Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) Book. Its 19 chapters, covering every aspect of moose biology, ecology and management, including hunting, are authored by 22 wildlifers. The volume features field sketch illustrations by the late William Berry, and it has a stunning section of color photos of moose, taken by some of North America's foremost wildlife photographers.
Ecology and Management of the North American Moose received The Wildlife Society's 1998 Editorship Book Award. Reviewers proclaimed it one of the most readable, attractive and informative wildlife books ever. "Literary types might balk at referring to a book about the biology and natural history of moose as a masterpiece, but for anyone with the slightest interest in the subject, it will be impossible to refer to this book as anything less," wrote one. Penned another, "What a monumental accomplishment of useful coverage of the largest of our deer species." Wrote yet another, "This book is simply excellent." Still another asserted, "The photos alone are worth the price of this book."
Now available in limited (short-run) quantity, the moose book sells for $75.00 U.S. (a paltry $15.00 per pound), plus shipping. WMI and UPC are so impressed with the second edition that they will refund the purchase price of the book if anyone is dissatisfied and returns it (with receipt) in perfect condition within four months of the purchase date and assuming the title still is in print.
