WMI President Position Description and Announcement Released
The Wildlife Management Institute is seeking a new President to replace Steve Williams who last month announced his plans to retire at the end of March 2023. The WMI Board of Directors has begun their search for a new president and plans to select a candidate on or before February 2023. A position description has been developed and qualified candidates are welcome to submit their materials for consideration. Following is the full position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Founded in 1911, the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) is a private, not for profit, scientific and educational organization, dedicated to the conservation, enhancement and professional management of North America's wildlife and other natural resources. WMI provides the following services to the conservation community: science and management, program review and policy development, information and education, project coordination, and service to profession and partners. The President is the chief executive officer and will represent WMI at the national level in collaboration with federal, state, and tribal agencies, non-governmental conservation organizations, the private sector, and academia. The President reports to and serves at the will of the WMI Board of Directors.

Specific duties include: represent WMI and serve as a liaison with the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies; directly supervise WMI’s Vice President, Programs Manager, and Relevancy specialist; coordinate project administration with the Vice President; conduct reviews of agency plans, programs, projects, policies, and organization; serve on committees, boards, and work groups; develop and administer the WMI budget; and provide financial oversight of WMI. In addition, the President, independently and as part of a WMI team, is expected to develop or identify actual and potential conservation projects that would generate revenue to support WMI administrative and project expenses. These projects must advance the WMI mission in collaboration with our partner organizations and agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
M.S. in Wildlife Biology/Management or related field
15 years’ experience in a state and/or federal fish and wildlife agency and/or commensurate experience with a national conservation or resource focused organization
Selection Criteria
Successful applicants must: have demonstrated knowledge of state, regional, and national wildlife resource policies and issues; have demonstrated core competencies; and be able to work productively in an independent and team environment. Applicants should be self-motivated and entrepreneurial.
