CWD Alliance puts chronic wasting disease on the map
The Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Alliance continues to improve the delivery of accurate, up-to-date information about CWD to hunters, wildlife managers, biologists, and all others interested in the effective control of the disease, reports the Wildlife Management Institute. The most recent innovation is an interactive, on-line "regulations" map that allows users to check CWD-related information by simply clicking on the state or province they wish to research.
The information includes specific regulations concerning wild and captive cervid transportation, carcass transportation, baiting and feeding of wildlife, and CWD testing programs. Users also see if CWD-positive captive or free-ranging cervids have been found in the state or province in question.
The regulations-mapping information project was an outgrowth of concern on the part of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency's (AFWA) Law Enforcement Committee about the lack of consistency among and general accessibility of CWD regulations. At the 72nd North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Portland, Oregon, this past March, the committee recommended that a list of the most-restrictive cervid carcass-transportation regulations be posted on the internet, along with an interactive map of the United States that would allow hunters to view appropriate CWD regulations state by state.
In cooperation with the AFWA committee, the CWD Alliance produced the map, using regulations data from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' biannually updated "CWD and Cervidae Regulations in North America" summary table. These data allowed the Alliance to broaden the scope of the project to all of North America.
The CWD regulations map can be accessed by clicking on the "Regulations" tab at www.cwd-info.org.
