Inviting Participation to Assess Wildlife Conservation Foundational Elements

March 2026 Edition - Volume 80, Issue 3

During the last 3 years, the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference, hosted by the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI) and its partners, has created a forum for discussion about creating a refined set of Foundational Elements of Fish and Wildlife Conservation that is current and forward-looking. The questionnaire seeks to gain insights from practitioners, policymakers, and academics about what policy items each person believes important to include in a future list of Foundational Elements.

WMI recognizes that conservation today is in a new and different era and that without proactive reflection and refinement, opportunities to advance fish and wildlife conservation may be missed. The outcome of this initiative is to provide non-prescriptive conservation guidance and support for conservation policies, programs, and actions reaffirming jurisdictional authorities and facilitating mission fulfillment. The questionnaire contains a list of issues that have been addressed in previous foundational wildlife policy documents. It is not an exhaustive list of all possible policy statements. Please feel empowered to add up to three potential statements of policy (your original thoughts or other policies with attribution if possible) at the end of the questionnaire.

WMI is soliciting your insights into which statements should be brought forward for consideration to include in a curated contemporary list of Foundational Elements of Fish and Wildlife Conservation. The questionnaire also provides an opportunity for you to identify additional Foundational Elements that should be considered for inclusion based upon current or anticipated future challenges. Depending on your level of reflection and feedback, this questionnaire could take 30-45 minutes to complete. Your responses are anonymous, and your responses will never be associated with your name. Your responses will be combined with the responses of others and reported in aggregate only.

We seek to receive as many perspectives as possible. This is your opportunity to provide suggestions for improvement in existing policies or innovate the statements that could inform current and future practitioners. We look forward to receiving your feedback as soon as possible. We look forward to continued dialogue on this topic and welcome your participation.
