The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released its Review of the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives on December 3. The report concludes that a landscape approach is needed to meet the nation's conservation challenges and that the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) provide a framework for addressing that need. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced a new conservation effort to help agricultural producers provide food and habitat for monarch butterflies in the Midwest and southern Great Plains. A targeted 10-state effort by USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will invest $4 million in 2016 to help combat their long-term and steady decline.
